Whisper Once Again the Story O’er

When the aspen leaf has fallenAnd the garden wall is bareAnd the geese are Southward flyingAnd serene and crisp the air,We can hear far far-off voicesAs though they were very near.

We sit beside the hearthstone,Watch the shadows dance and fall.Out of the far distanceWell-remembered voices call,And the whippoorwill is singingAs he sang so long ago.

Pull back the ashesCover the coals—At tomorrow’s touchThe hearth will glow.
