To Avis on Valentine’s Day
Drab is the lawn and leafless the trees,But hopefully they wait the coming of Spring.
The night is deep and frosty and cold,But soon will the veil be pierced by the sun.
The fields are barren and lifeless the woods,But the thrush and the robin are now on the wing.
The firefly and cricket lie asleep in the mould,But the sun in his orbit will rouse them again.
Why, O my love, am I lonely todayAnd what is my hope if you come not to me.
